Please make SmartGit smart here too: Dialog: Add GitHub Account

Hello

With SmartGit, it’s unfortunately a recurring disappointment that SmartGit doesn’t guide users smartly, for example, this dialog:

  • Of course, a user can have multiple GitHub accounts.
  • So why doesn’t this dialog explicitly mention which account is being referred to?


Is the user supposed to assume 🥴 that SmartGit is referring to the repository that is currently active?

Well, in reality, a GitLab (not GitHub) repository is active in SnartGit 😉

It would be a great solution for users who rarely work with Git and are therefore very happy to have an app that walks them through such tasks and leaves no questions unanswered  - questions they would otherwise have to figure out on their own.

But that’s true, too, of course:

btw.: Unfortunately, this dialog isn’t smart either:

  • Managing accounts, tokens, etc., in Git is a nightmare if users don’t use it regularly. 
  • That’s why a smart solution in this area would be brilliant which guides users through the process and gets them to their goal.
  • In the Dialog above, SmartGit customers can configure a repository here, but why is there no information about which login or account is being used?
  • In other words: Why does the user have to search through the menus to find the right login information?

A smart solution would:

  • either allow the user to change their login credentials directly in this dialog 
  • or provide a clickable link to access the dialog where they can do so. 
    But, of course: If the repository in the dialog above is a GitLab repository and SmartGit has multiple GitLab accounts, the link will naturally not lead to a list of all GitLab credentials, but specifically to the credentials currently assigned to the repository in the dialog. That is smart 😍
