It is tough quite annoying that we have to reconfigure all the repos and submodules to Gitlab.

you're right - it should've been smoother. Does it happen for all your repos though? In the simplest case, one matching provider for the repository, there should not be the need to select anything. Would you mind dropping us a support mail (ideally with logs, and the hosting-providers.yml attached) so I can have a look on what's going on here?
