Yes, this is definitively an improvement compared to the differences between the icons before the change.
I still think that the borderless star of SmartGit 25 made the icon shape better distinguishable, but I guess it also breaks the icon style a bit.
As for the color, I understand that the idea of "+" and "*" both being green is, that both are new files. However, it might be clearer to make the shades of green a bit more different (make "+" darker?) or give "*" a different color altogether (maybe turquoise, which is still similar to green?).
But even those smaller improvements in your example are very welcome and I hope they get released.
